The Ha Giang Loop is the most dramatic road in Southeast Asia. The Royal Enfield Himalayan 450 is the best bike to ride it on. This guide covers every day of the loop — from Hanoi to Ha Giang City, through the UNESCO Dong Van Geopark, across Ma Pi Leng Pass, and back — with specific notes on how the Himalayan 450 performs on each section.
Written by HTmotortour guides who have ridden this route on the Royal Enfield Himalayan 450 more than 50 times.
Why the Himalayan 450 for Ha Giang
Ha Giang is not a simple destination. Passes reach 1,800 metres. The road from Dong Van to Meo Vac traverses Ma Pi Leng — a cliff road with a 1,000-metre drop to the Nho Que River below. Some sections have no guardrails.
The Himalayan 450 is matched to this environment because:
- Liquid-cooled engine stays at stable temperature through sustained altitude climbing — the air-cooled 411 ran visibly hotter
- 43mm Showa USD forks with 200mm travel absorb Ma Pi Leng’s compressed corners without bottoming
- 230mm ground clearance clears raised road edges and rough patches
- 500km fuel range — comfortable margins at every fuel stop on the loop
- TFT navigation continues on offline maps when signal drops — and it does, for hours at a time
Ha Giang Loop Royal Enfield Himalayan 450 : The Route — Day by Day
Day 1: Hanoi → Ha Giang City (320km · 5–6 hours)
Highway riding, predominantly flat. National Highway 2 north through Tuyen Quang and Bac Me to Ha Giang City. The Himalayan 450 sits comfortably at 100–110 km/h cruise — no highway anxiety.
Before leaving Hanoi: Download offline maps for Ha Giang province. Signal becomes intermittent north of Bac Me. Fill tank in Ha Giang City before Day 2.
Day 2: Ha Giang City → Dong Van (170km · 4–5 hours riding)
The first mountain day. The road climbs through Quan Ba — the Twin Mountains appear in morning mist at 1,500m — then continues through Yen Minh and into the Dong Van Karst Plateau Geopark, Vietnam’s first UNESCO Global Geopark.
Himalayan 450 note: Quan Ba Pass is the first real altitude test. The Sherpa motor pulls cleanly without hesitation. The TFT navigation guides you through junctions where unmarked turns can send you the wrong direction.
Fuel stop: Yen Minh (~km 80). Fill up here — reliable. Dong Van has fuel but can be inconsistent.
Side trip: Lung Cu Flag Tower — Vietnam’s northernmost point. 9km north of Dong Van. Add 2 hours. Worth it every time.
Day 3: Dong Van → Meo Vac → Bao Lac (130km · 3–4 hours riding)
The shortest distance, the most significant day. Ma Pi Leng Pass begins 8km from Dong Van — 20km of cliff road cut into limestone karst above the Nho Que River.
On the Himalayan 450: Ma Pi Leng is where the suspension upgrade over the 411 is most clearly felt. The forks track precisely through compressed corners on the descent. The rear shock holds stable through the switchbacks. Switchable ABS: leave it on through the descent sections.
At the Ma Pi Leng viewpoint — 1,000 metres above the Nho Que River — most riders stop for 20 minutes without being asked to.
After Meo Vac, the road drops toward Bao Lac through Hmong and Dao villages. Less dramatic than the morning, beautiful in a quieter way.
Day 4: Bao Lac → Ha Giang City → Hanoi (return)
The return south through Bao Lam and the lower valleys. Comfortable mixed riding on the Himalayan 450. The seat after three days of mountain riding is adequate — a gel pad makes the longer return day more comfortable. Consider splitting this over two days: one night in Ha Giang City, early start to Hanoi the next morning.

Guided Tour vs Self-Guided
Self-guided: Suitable for experienced riders who have researched the route. Requirements: offline maps downloaded, WhatsApp contact for mechanical support, honest assessment of riding level. Ha Giang’s roads are serious but navigable for capable riders.
HTmotortour Guided Ha Giang Loop — 6 Days/5 Nights: Our guides ride the same Himalayan 450 fleet. Maximum 6 riders per group. All meals, accommodation, 24/7 support included. From €480/person.
Frequently Asked Questions
- Is the Royal Enfield Himalayan 450 good for the Ha Giang Loop?
- Yes — it is our recommended bike for Ha Giang. The 40 bhp liquid-cooled engine, Showa suspension, 230mm ground clearance, and TFT navigation are all directly relevant to Ha Giang’s demands. It is the best all-round choice for this route in 2026.
- What is the difficulty of the Ha Giang Loop?
- Moderate for experienced riders on a suitable bike. Roads are paved throughout. The challenge is sustained mountain riding, altitude, and the technical nature of Ma Pi Leng Pass. Not an extreme off-road route — but not casual either.
- Best time to ride Ha Giang on the Himalayan 450?
- September–November for golden rice terraces and clear mountain skies — the best photos, the best riding conditions. March–April for wildflowers and spring clarity. Avoid June–August (rainy season — road conditions deteriorate and some sections have landslide risk).
- Can a beginner ride Ha Giang on the Himalayan 450?
- A beginner should not self-guide Ha Giang on a 450. Joining as a pillion passenger on a guided tour is possible at any experience level. Riders with some basic mountain experience can join as primary rider on our guided tour with guidance from the team.
- What does a guided Ha Giang Loop tour cost with HTmotortour?
