XR150 vs CB500X vs NX500: Which Bike Should You Rent for Vietnam?
The XR150 is best for beginners and shorter trips (semi-automatic, lightweight, cheapest). The CB500X is the go-to for experienced riders on multi-week tours (471cc manual, most comfortable). The NX500 is the CB500X’s 2025 successor — same engine, better tech, slightly higher price. |
Every week, we get the same question from riders planning their Vietnam trip: ‘Which bike should I get?’ It sounds simple. It isn’t — because the right bike depends entirely on your experience level, your route, and how long you’re riding.
We’ve been running bike rentals and motorbike tours in Vietnam for years. We’ve watched riders thrive on all three of these bikes, and we’ve watched riders struggle when they chose the wrong one. This guide gives you the honest answer.
The Quick Answer: Match the Bike to Your Experience
Direct answer: If you’ve never ridden manual — rent the XR150. If you have 1+ year of manual experience and want comfort on long tours — rent the CB500X or NX500. The NX500 is newer tech; the CB500X is slightly cheaper and equally reliable.

The Honda XR150 — Best for Beginners and Light Riders
Direct answer: The XR150 is the most popular adventure bike on the Ha Giang Loop for a reason: it’s semi-automatic (no clutch), lightweight at 118kg, and Honda parts are available in every Vietnamese town. The right choice for first-timers and riders under 75kg.

Who should choose the XR150
You’ve never ridden a manual motorbike before — the semi-auto removes the hardest part of mountain riding
You’re under 75–80kg and want a bike that’s easy to pick up if you drop it on gravel
Your trip is 3–7 days and you’re not doing 200km+ daily stages
You want the most affordable rental option without sacrificing reliability
Honest limitations
Not comfortable for tall riders (185cm+) on all-day rides
Struggles above 90km/h — not ideal for flat highway sections between mountain zones
7.5L tank means more fuel stops in remote areas
XR150 on the Ha Giang Loop The XR150 is probably the most common bike on the Ha Giang Loop. The roads are paved, the passes are steep but manageable on a 150cc engine, and the semi-auto means riders who’d normally struggle with a clutch on mountain descents can focus entirely on the road. It works. Thousands of riders prove it every year. Book a Ha Giang Loop tour with an XR150 → https://htmotortour.com/st_tour/ha-giang-loop-tour-from-hanoi/ |
The Honda CB500X — Best for Experienced Tourers
Direct answer: The CB500X is the workhorse of the HTmotortour fleet for long-distance riders. The 471cc parallel-twin pulls hard from low revs, the 17.7L tank covers 400km+ between fills, and the upright riding position stays comfortable over 200km days. Requires full manual clutch experience.

Who should choose the CB500X
You have at least 12 months of manual clutch riding experience
You’re doing a 10–21 day tour across northern Vietnam or the full Ho Chi Minh Trail
You’re 165–190cm tall — the CB500X has a proper touring riding position
You want the confidence of a bigger engine on long mountain passes
You’re riding two-up — the CB500X handles passenger weight on climbs far better than 150cc bikes
Honest limitations
At 199kg, it’s harder to maneuver in tight situations — and harder to pick up if dropped
Non-switchable ABS can feel intrusive on very steep loose gravel descents
Full manual clutch — not suitable for riders still learning
CB500X on the Ho Chi Minh Trail The 10-day Ho Chi Minh Trail from Hanoi is where the CB500X earns its reputation. Long highway sections, mountain passes, jungle roads — the 17.7L tank and comfortable ergonomics make it the first choice for this route. The Honda NX500 — Best Tech, Same Engine
Direct answer: The NX500 is Honda’s 2025 successor to the CB500X. Same 471cc engine but with a full-color TFT display, riding modes (Standard/Sport/Rain), updated styling, and slightly taller seat (845mm). It’s the CB500X for riders who want modern features.
CB500X | NX500 (2025–26) | |
|---|---|---|
Engine | 471cc parallel-twin | 471cc parallel-twin (same) |
Display | LCD dash | Full-color TFT |
Riding modes | None | Standard / Sport / Rain |
Seat height | 830mm | 845mm |
Styling | Classic ADV | Modern ADV |
Daily rate (7d+) | from ~$22 | from ~$24 |
Verdict | Proven, slightly cheaper | Better tech, worth the premium |
For most riding on Vietnamese roads — the performance difference is imperceptible. The NX500’s riding modes are a genuine advantage in rain (common in September–October). The CB500X is mechanically proven over more years of touring here. Both are excellent choices.
Which Bike for the Ha Giang Loop — The Definitive Answer
Direct answer: First-time or returning rider with limited manual experience → XR150. Experienced rider doing the 4–5 day Big Loop → CB500X or NX500. All three bikes have completed the Ha Giang Loop countless times. The route doesn’t require the bigger bikes — your experience level does.
Rider Profile | Recommended Bike | Why |
|---|---|---|
First-time manual rider | XR150 | Semi-auto removes clutch anxiety on mountain passes |
Intermediate (1-2 years manual) | XR150 or CB500X | Depends on trip length and route |
Experienced (2+ years manual) | CB500X or NX500 | More power, comfort, range for serious touring |
Two-up rider | CB500X or NX500 | Engine grunt handles passenger weight on climbs |
Off-road focused | XR150 or CRF250 | Lighter = easier to control on dirt tracks |
Budget-conscious | XR150 | ~$4–6/day cheaper — significant on a 14-day trip |

Frequently Asked Questions
Can a complete beginner ride the CB500X?
No — we don’t recommend the CB500X for anyone without solid manual clutch experience. On mountain passes in Ha Giang, an unfamiliar clutch is a safety risk. The XR150 (semi-automatic) is designed for exactly this situation. Start with the XR150, come back for the CB500X on your next trip.
Is the NX500 worth the extra cost over the CB500X?
Depends on your trip. For a 14+ day tour in mixed conditions including rain season (September–October), the NX500’s rain mode and TFT navigation display are genuinely useful. For a 7-day loop in dry season, the CB500X is equally good and slightly cheaper.
Which bike is best for the Ha Giang Loop if I’m 185cm tall?
Either the CB500X or NX500. At 185cm, the XR150’s seat height and ergonomics will be uncomfortable after 4+ hours. The CB500X’s touring position was designed for taller riders. Both have 830–845mm seat height which works for most riders up to 195cm.
Can I switch bikes mid-tour if I’m not happy?
In most cases, yes — subject to availability. Contact us on WhatsApp and we’ll arrange a swap at the nearest major town. This is rare but we’ve done it. The important thing is to choose carefully upfront — message us before booking and we’ll help you decide.
Do you offer test rides before committing to a rental?
Yes — we offer a short test ride at our Hanoi location before finalizing the rental. We recommend this for anyone trying a new bike model for the first time. Book your rental online, then arrange a test ride time via WhatsApp: +84 942 757 141.
